adventures of an amateur gardener: may 29. 2013

I haven't photographed in the garden for over a month, but things have progressed a good bit since the last post, so I figured it was about time.

A bunch of radishes, planted back in mid-March
Lettuce mix from seed
Red beets, planted back in March
Pea plants from seed!  Soon we'll be enjoying our first peas!
Pea blossoms
Carrots, planted in mid-March
Beginning of broccoli head, planted from seedlings purchased at farmers market at the beginning of April
Swiss chard, planted from seed
Tom Thumb lettuce, planted from seed (this is my favorite plant, it's so cute!)

Radishes, planted late April or early May (can't remember)
Yellow squash!  Plant starts purchased from Corner Store, planted a few weeks ago
Happy squash & zucchini
New garden out back, full of tomato and pepper plants (all purchased at Corner Store)
Hot peppers!
Mr. Stripey heirloom tomato.  I have my fingers crossed for beautiful stripey harvests!
First lettuce harvest for dinner last night.  Mesclun mix, spinach, arugula, and butterhead (the cute Tom Thumb)

Happy basket!
The resulting dinner.  Mixed greens salad tossed with (homemade) lime vinaigrette and topped with avocado, fresh corn, feta and local bacon (the best ever)
The harvests are only just getting started, but having a garden is such a joyful thing!  All that work building beds and planting seeds & seedlings and weeding and watering is so worth the excitement of gathering actual, healthful, wonderful food from your very own yard.  Seeing our first pea pods and watching Evin's face light up as we walked around after being away from home for a long weekend, discovering the new developments with our plants, was the happiest thing.  More soon!
